MFC Community Cooking Classes
Connecting Through Food
The Marquette Food Co-op has been offering food education for nearly 20 years. Our community cooking classes draw inspiration from cuisines around the world to create tasty and nutritious food that utilizes as many local ingredients as possible. FAQs
-
The curriculum of every public class is unique, and age requirements are sometimes necessary. Please be sure to refer to the class descriptions to check for appropriate age requirements. For our adult classes, only children 13 and older may attend and must be registered and paidthrough Humanitix, our online ticketing platform, just like an adult.
-
Public classes require prepayment through Humanitix at the time of registration. We are unable to accept payment at the store. For our public classes, Co-op owners are given a discounted ticket rate, but that rate only applies to their ticket, not tickets for non-owners they may be purchasing tickets for.
For individuals hosting a party or private class, payment is required prior to the start of the class. We can set up a private Humanitix link for members of your class to register and pay for their own tickets or set up an invoice for the total class cost. Invoices may be paid at the Customer Service Desk in the store. For businesses and organizations, we offer standard 30-day invoicing.
Tabling events and presentations are offered free of charge.
-
Refunds will only be guaranteed for cancellations with at least three business days’ notice. Refunds are not given for no-shows or those who cancel after tickets sales have ended. If you are unable to attend after ticket sales have ended, we encourage you to give your ticket to a friend.
Please note that refunds will include the ticket price less the Humanitix fees (which consist of the payment processing fee and service fee combined). If the Marquette Food Co-op cancels the class or postpones and you’re unable to attend the new class date, refunds will be for the full cost, including the ticket price and the Humanitix fees.

Yes. Humanitix has a waitlist feature. When a ticket becomes available, the first waitlisted guest will be notified via email with a link to purchase tickets. Every 30 minutes, the next guest in line will be notified if tickets are still available. Once every waitlisted guest has been notified, available tickets will be reopened to the public. Waitlisted guests will need to purchase tickets while they are available as their tickets will not be held.

Unfortunately, no.

We cannot guarantee a 100 percent gluten or allergen free environment for our classes. While menus can be created to suit your dietary needs, many types of classes are hosted in our classroom. We do not have space to ensure special equipment or counter space is reserved as allergen free in the same manner as a certified facility. Additionally, there may be flour or other allergens in storage in the room. We would, however, take every precaution possible in the preparation of your food to ensure your meal suits your needs within these boundaries.

You may not bring food purchasedoutside of the Marquette Food Co-op, except for a few items we don’t supply, such as a birthday cake. Our community outreach, including events in the classroom space, is made possible through the success of our store sales — we appreciate your purchase of MFC food items to support our ongoing efforts. Please note that if you will be in the classroom beyond your scheduled cooking class time, such as for cake and gifts for a birthday, you must pay an additional $35 facility fee that covers up to two extra hours in the space before or after your class. All outside food must be approved by your MFC event coordinator.
-
Sure. But if you send someone in your place to the class, please have them bring your ticket.
-
No, you do not have to bring your printed ticket to the event. If you can’t attend and want to give your ticket to someone else, it would be helpful if they bring it to the event.
-
For evening classes, we recommend that you eat a light snack before class begins. In most classes food is served at the end, which can be later in the evening.
-
You are welcome to bring an apron if you like, as often you will assist in preparing some of the dishes during the class. We have a few aprons to hand out, but there is a limited supply, and they are claimed quickly.
-
There is limited availability for classroom rentals. This is due to the high demand for our classes, which requires use of the classroom. On a case-by-case basis, we may work with individuals or organizations whose work is aligned with our mission, and contributes to a healthy community, food systems work, or environmental stewardship. Reach out to our Outreach Director Sarah Monte at smonte@marquettefood.coop for more.

If you would like to teach a cooking class, please read through our classroom policies to ensure it is the right fit and contact us.

In order to keep classes affordable, we use an online ticketing platform rather than administer the tickets ourselves. We chose Humanitix because 100 percent of profits from ticketing are donated to education and health charities. Learn more about their mission here.
